BIGkids - Superhero (Video)

This is the new (slightly disturbing) video from BIGkids in which some small kids act all big and make us realise that actually the way some adults behave is pretty small, soundtracked by a song sung by an adult saying that she’s going to be a superhero when she grows up.

Watch out for the amazing (if you can call vomit amazing) green sick just after the 1.30 point and lots of clever little touches to the video (the superhero statues in the boys bedroom, David Bowie posters (“we could be heroes just for one day?”), the way the sick scene accompanies the line “I’m sick of feeling small,”, the transformation from child to adult during crowd surfing etc etc etc.

Let’s not get distracted by the chunder though, it’s ultimately about the song isn’t it? And the song is sick. Mr Hudson and Rosie Oddie have thrown up the goods here. Superhero is an infectiously catchy squelchy fun pop tune that sounds like a proper hit, if only radio would grab hold of it. Embrace your inner child and enjoy BIGkids.

Pris - A-Bomb In White Heat

Remember Pris? They're the sassy d-i-y girl band that was sticking two fingers harshly up in front of the face of a lame pop culture world that seemed to have forgotten how to be angry.

Well, they’re back, stripped down to a two piece but still full of energy, wrath and pouty sexiness.

Having recently tweeted a picture of Fred from Spector with the word TWAT scrawled across it, new single A-Bomb In White Heat rails against Shoreditch and Hoxton hipsters like a Kenickie for 2012.  We’re pretty sure that Lauren Laverne would approve. “Oh he just died again, oh he just died again, with his garage band sleeves and his cocaine disease, oh she just died again, oh she just died again, dance away her stress in her mum’s wedding dress,” opens Cat against a barrage of whack it hard military style drumming and we’re hooked straight away. (The military style is taken further in the video, although we’re not sure if we’ve ever seen soldiers this glamorous or cool as f*ck looking.)

“Let’s kill them all do you concur?” the duo continue later; Cat is certainly a lady who doesn’t mince her words. And even although ultimately Breaking More Waves is all above peace and love, we can’t help but finding ourselves nodding along in agreement, so persuasive is the Pris blend of punkish power-pop. It’s good to have them back. We're looking forward to this war.

Little Boots - Every Night I Say A Prayer (Video)

Of all the artists we’ve featured since Breaking More Waves was born on the internet Little Boots is the one that we’ve posted about the most. This is probably because as a female keyboard playing vocalist doing accessible but occasionally slightly wonky pop music she ticks all of our boxes, but also because as much as we love Little Boots she doesn’t always quite get things right (or in other words, meet our expectations) and it gives us something to write about.

The euphoric dance pop anthem Every Night I Say A Prayer got things 100% right, so much so that if there was a Breaking More Waves pop chart, Little Boots would be a new entry at no.1. Now after streaming the song a few days ago Victoria Hesketh (the only pop star we can think of that was maybe named after a 1970’s formula one racing car) has revealed a video for the song. In some shots Victoria (or the Vickster as she shall now be known) appears to be wearing a dress far too short for her (so that’s one for the boys and gay girls) and there is lots of quite ludicrous arty dancing going on by rather lithe young men (so that’s one for the girls and gay guys.) So not only is The Vixter making a good pop tune these days, but she’s keeping everyone happy visually.

Well done The Vickster. Good work. Keep it up etc etc etc.

Keep an eye out for excited 140 character messages on twitter this Friday from us, as we watch Little Boots perform in London.

Bluebell - Cinderella

Sadly ex Lady & The Lost Boys singer and musical starlet in the waiting Annabel Jones recently lost her father Davy, lead singer of The Monkees. Annabel left these simple touching words on her facebook page following his death.

“Some of you may or may not know that on Wednesday last week I lost my Father. My family and I have been overwhelmed by the love and support of everyone who has reached out to tell us that we're not alone. Thank you for helping to make me feel less lost and bottomless, knowing you are all dotted around the Earth makes life less frightening and like if we all reached out we could hold hands and make a chain all the way around the planet. Dad and I connected mostly over music, song writing and performance, that's where we understood each other. The hours I spent sitting amongst you all watching him perform are honestly some of my most precious and treasured moments. Everything was so simple while he was up there, I felt proud and close and I understood him there, as I know you all did.”

Now Annabel continues that bond she had with her father through her pop project Bluebell and this new song called Cinderella. Whilst Normal Heights her debut was a romantic slow pulsing pop symphony, Cinderella sounds a little more highly strung (in a good way). “This is no Walt Disney, I’m not Cinderella, I’m just a girl,” sings Annabel with just a faint hint of Marina & The Diamonds operatics whilst waves of distorted beats, one note piano stabs and washes of electronics keep our pop palette satiated. Good stuff.
