insofar as I’m not writing about the song itself, but instead highlighting the
Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly playlist on Spotify, where the Song of the
Week will always feature.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">There’s a handful of points I wanted to make about this
playlist.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">1.This playlist ultimately is made for me to listen to as much
as you. And I do. They are all tracks that I like – if I can’t get behind a
particular track, it doesn’t go on the playlist.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">2. The playlist is always around 1 hour long. There are two
reasons for this – I don’t really see the point of a six-hour playlist, who
genuinely sits through something that long in one sitting? I certainly don’t.
And the point of my playlist is it’s meant to be listened to in one listen, in
order. The tracks are positioned in a way that makes sense to me – even if
nobody else understands! Think of it like a movie or a story. There’s a
definite beginning, middle and end together with closing credits.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">3. I have listened to every song that goes on the playlist in
full at least once and normally several times before it goes on the playlist. I
must like it! This is key. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">4. I’ve seen this style of playlist described as ‘hyper-curated’.
Well, if hyper-curation is for a niche audience and I’m making it just for
myself, that’s pretty niche I guess. You’ll always find some indie and some pop
on there but I’m not averse to any genre if it’s something I come across that I
like.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">5. I read an article about “people who intricately craft a
playlist and put their life and soul into it.” Personally, I think that’s bollocks.
It’s just a frigging playlist. Yes, I put some thought into it, but that’s a
few minutes thought. Not my life and soul. There are more important things in
life to dedicate my time to. Let's not try and make playlist curation anything bigger than it actually is.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">6. And finally, of course, given the name, every track placed
on the playlist has been released between the previous Saturday and the Friday
the playlist is updated. That’s why it’s called New Music Weekly – but that’s obvious,
right?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So, here’s my favourite track from last week’s playlist. It’s
Metronomy featuring Pan Amsterdam – an old school rap piece with some neat
jazzy trumpet that shows us that Metronomy are still able to surprise us after
all these years.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">You can find and follow the Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly Playlist by <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=9be3fb7649654246">clicking here.</a></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Metronomy featuring Pan Amsterdam - Nice Town</b></span></p><p></p>

The signs all looked good. Olly has plenty of experience at performing, the song was co-written and co-produced by Danny L Harle (who co-wrote Bunny Is A Rider with Caroline Polachek and Houdini by Dua Lipa) and the initial clip of the track posted on Instagram sounded suitably hooky.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, whilst the song bounces along giddily enough, it doesn’t have any real climax moment – something that seems almost essential to win Eurovision these days. It’s enjoyable enough, but I’m not 100% behind it.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Enter then the Swiss entry, also released in the last seven days. <i>The Code</i> is really quite something. You want climaxes? This one does multiple orgasms. Fast.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Imagine <i>Bohemian Rhapsody</i> given a jungle remix with extra rapping and a personal lyric about a true journey to find the artist’s (Nemo) non-binary identity in life. I love the fact that the song is clearly personal and not one that takes vague big picture concepts about love and peace to try and gain universal Eurovision acceptance. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">At first you’ll probably think the track is bonkers, then it gets under your skin and before you know it you’ll be declaring it a Eurovision styled masterpiece.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">There’s already some tough competition for Eurovision (Italy’s song is very good, Croatia’s is bound to be a fan favourite (and in places sounds like the KLF - always a good thing), The Netherlands have a mad happy hardcore moment in their track that no doubt will have Eurovision fans going crazy and you can never discount Sweden who nearly always deliver and Finland’s fireworks / no pants production is hilarious, but I’m putting Nemo and Switzerland up there as a colourfully magnificent outside bet. And even if it flops / doesn't qualify through the semis, at least it won Breaking More Waves Song of the Week.</span></p><p><b>Nemo - The Code</b></p>

Pop music has always been that way of course, it’s why we can described music as having an ‘80’s sound’ or ‘60’s sound’. Pop = a popular sound, so if it's popular humans will want to make more of it.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, it’s always nice to stumble across something that is refreshingly inventive and adventurous. Which is exactly what the new song <i>Black Wig</i> from Ren Harvieu is. Remember Ren? She first featured on this blog in 2011 and in a Ones to Watch 2012 post. Her debut album reached number 5 in the charts in May 2012. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">These days she leads a lower key musical existence but that doesn’t mean that her new tune is anything less than wonderful. On <i>Black Wig</i> there’s a string quartet, a harpsichord, a musical saw and a colourful video directed by Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers who Ren has a long-term musical relationship with.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Listen, enjoy and take some satisfaction in the knowledge that there are still people out there creating their own unique musical worlds. You won't see or hear anything else like <i>Black Wig</i> this week.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">You can find the song on the Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly Playlist (<a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=cPVn7ZCXT_6DCztL8CQ6aQ&pi=e-Tdp7rWPqR9iE">here</a>)</span></p><p><b>Ren Harvieu - Black Wig</b></p><div><br /></div>

She’s already a huge popstar. Well, she’s five foot eight inches which technically isn’t that huge, but is still a lot bigger than Kylie Minogue. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">And no doubt, unless you have been hiding under a rock, you have already heard this one. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Therefore, you already know that <i>Training Season</i> is: 1. A bop 2. Hooky as hell (rather than <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOyePhElr4">hotter than hell which is so 2016.</a>) It’s one of those songs that your postman will be whistling and football fans will take the chorus and make new words up to it whilst bouncing up and down on the stands. My only disappointment? I really wanted all the lads in the video to suddenly break out into a very camp Riverdance style flashmob choreographed routine halfway through the tune, but alas it never happened. Maybe there will be an ‘alternate version’ video for that.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The bottom line is, <i>Training Season</i> = A good pop song. A definite top 2 single in the UK surely? The band also played one of my most memorable and magical shows ever; Glastonbury Festival 1998. Together with my then 3 months pregnant partner we had already endured biblical storms and a crushingly dull set from Cornershop on the Jazz World Stage, now known as West Holts. Cold, tired and miserable we were about to give up and go back to our tent (which at this point had a small stream running through the middle of it) but held on for Portishead. The band were late on stage, having got stuck in the mud themselves, but once they started the dark clouds really did show they had a silver lining. Words such as haunting, mesmerising, and beautiful didn’t do the performance justice. With lightning striking down from the heavens behind the stage we shivered both with the cold and emotional goosebumps; it was worth every moment. It’s a moment in time that both of us, 26 years on, still remember with huge affection. A moment that made life worth living and sharing with someone.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Which brings us to Beth Gibbons new single. The lead vocalist of Portishead returns after a lengthy hiatus with another song to captivate our hearts. Taken from forthcoming album <i>Lives Outgrown</i> released via Domino, <i>Floating On A Moment</i> is perhaps half-surprising in that Beth Gibbons still sounds, after all this time, exactly like Beth Gibbons. Her croon is unmistakeable and once again her sorrowful but magnetic voice sends shivers down the spine.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Beth, just like all of us is getting older. There’s a realisation that our bodies are only finite and ultimately there is nothing we can do to stop our inevitable ending as she hints at death in this song: “Without control, I’m heading toward a boundary, that divides us, reminds us, travelling, on a voyage where the living, they have never been, have never seen.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Despite the subject of the song, <i>Floating On A Moment</i> breathes life into our existence. Guaranteed to make even the most hardened of adult weep. Enjoy life whilst you've got it. Yes, there are many horrible things going on in the world, but wherever you can try to appreciate the good stuff. Like this.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Beth Gibbons - Floating On A Moment</b></span></p>

Or does the week actually run in any seven day period? And more to the point, does anybody actually care?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So, let’s just cut to the chase and remind ourselves that time is just a human construct and in the big scheme of things (or even the small scheme of things) nobody really gives a toss about the Breaking More Waves Song of the Week. Except me.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">But if you do have any passing interest in these things then have a listen to <i>Born To Lose</i> by Elle Coves. There’s a big dollop of Americana-Pop and Taylor Swift influence here, which depending on your perspective is either a rather excellent thing or just a bit overdone these days. It also has some rather nice lyrics about “what makes you think your tears can put this fire out”, which technically Elle is 100% right about. Unless of course it’s the world’s smallest fire or somebody has a sprinkler system built in their eyes. Anyway, even if <i>Born To Lose</i> isn’t actually about fire fighting with your eyes, it’s a pleasing tune. You can find it as always on the Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly playlist (<a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=eabc6ec561b64597">here</a>), or at least you can if you are reading this before Friday 9th February, because it's all change then.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Elle Coves plays London Camden Assembly (or The Barfly as older readers may remember it, or The Monarch for those collecting their pensions) tomorrow (the 7th) and there are still some tickets available if you fancy it.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Elle Coves - Born To Lose</b></span></p>

Probably like many people I first discovered her music by way of BBC 6 Music. I think Nadine herself realises how important 6 Music has been in her career. The first time I saw her live she stared into the audience, smiled and proclaimed: “Ah! The smell of 6 Music is here.”</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">As Nadine gets ready to release her 5th album <i>Filthy Underneath</i>, I’m pleased to report that the quality of her songs just gets better and better. Latest track <i>Greatest Dancer</i> is no exception. Featuring stomping glam-rock marching drums (a few years ago we might have referred to them as Gary Glitter drums, but that’s probably best not done now is it?) and gloriously raw stabs of synth (Is it even possible to make electronic music sound raw rather then polished? It appears so) the song is a triumph. And let’s not forget Shah’s voice. She makes a song about sitting watching Strictly Come Dancing on TV sound celestial.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The song heads up this week’s Breaking More Waves New Music Playlist (<a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=b1bd0b48b8eb4f4b">which you can find and follow by clicking here</a>). Natalie Woodward and Rich Willats, who jointly call themselves Wynona and describe
their music as ‘Mum-Jean’ rock. I’m not quite sure what that is but I’m all for
inventing genres so I’ll go with it.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, a warning to all mums in jeans. The rules of pop
Chapter 12 section 3.7 specifically state that jeans shouldn’t be worn over the
age of 33 and a third (it’s all tied up with jeans being a revolutionary
trouser and once you’re over that age, revolution stops). However, a further rule
hidden away in section 7.2 of the same chapter clarifies that once you get over
45 the jean wearing can start again, because at that point you’re too old too
care and you are probably wearing terribly cut elasticated waist Asda Value
jeans anyway. So, a note to all, check your age and ditch those jeans if you’ve
hit the marker. Note this rule also applies to dads. Although Dad-Jean rock is
probably not a genre I would want to hear as I suspect it would contain a lot
of landfill indie.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Enough of this pointless waffle though. (Warning if you’re
new to Breaking More Waves, that’s what this blog does; pointless waffle – if you
want serious music journalism try The Quietus or such like). <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Let’s talk about the music.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Wynona’s song is called <i>Feeling For Edges </i>and clocks in at a
short-lived 2 minutes and forty one seconds. It throws us back to the hazy, jangly,
wistful days of bands like The Sundays in its construction. It’s all gentle guitars
and pretty melodies that sing of being on the brink of finding yourself but being
stuck there; “I’ve been sitting on fences for the longest time.” <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><i>Feeling For Edges</i> is laid back alt-acoustic-pop at its
loveliest, kissing the ears in all the right places. It might not be pushing
any boundaries, but sometimes (despite the song being called <i>Feeling For Edges</i>)
beauty can be found in the middle. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">You’ll find this one on the Breaking More Waves New Music

<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">No more just posting the occasional introducing-style post called NEW.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I’m going (partly) back to what I did

previous week.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Let’s title them Song of the Week shall we?
Good huh? It took me a long time to think of that. Honest. </span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I’ll keep doing the
occasional introducing post as well.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">To tie things up neatly the Song of the Week will
always be a tune that features on the Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly
playlist (another originally titled thing I do – which you can follow on
Spotify). So if you have already listened to this week's edition, you'll have heard this one and know how gorgeous it is.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So here we go. Song of the Week #1 is <i>Good
Dog</i> by Nashville’s Danielle Durack. For fans of the sort of sad girl acoustic folk-pop that
the likes of Phoebe Bridgers writes, <i>Good Dog</i> seems to be a song about a dog
waiting for and missing its owner: “I’ve been waiting by the window in the
dark, keeping quiet, sat listening for your car.” However, as the song continues
it seems that Danielle is projecting some of her own insecurities into the song
as well. It's not just a cute song about her canine pal.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Tender, bruised and beautiful, the one
thing you probably wouldn’t expect an introspective song like <i>Good Dog</i> to have
is a rather comical (but kind of sad) video featuring a lonely hot dog sausage. But that's exactly what it has. Trigger warning for sausage lovers – the ending is brutal. You'll either laugh or cry. Possibly both.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Danielle releases the follow up to her album
N<i>o Place </i>in February 2024 and it’s called <i>The Escape Artist</i>. You can order it
through Bandcamp now by <a href="https://danielledurack.bandcamp.com/album/escape-artist">clicking here.</a> She also has a number of US shows in
February and March. Alas at the moment for those of us in the UK there’s no
sign of dates here, but let’s keep everything crossed for something in the
future.</span></p><p class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Danielle Durack - Good Dog</b></span></p><p></p>

person that listens to an album from start to finish means that there's a big bunch of people out there that don't. More than ever we live in an age where not only people’s temperaments seem
to get ever shorter but so do attention spans. This is bad news for albums,
particularly for artists producing long, sprawling, often challenging listens.
Who wants to sit through over an hour and 15 minutes of Lana Del Rey’s lengthy
flawed beauty that is <i>Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd</i> when other
internet sources can give you a 30 second blast of everything you think you
need? The Tiktokification of music is killing patience. But greater long term
reward requires that patience. So yes, I will sit through Lana’s
new record from start to finish with no interruption multiple times. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Therefore, if nothing else you can rest assured that the 10 records on this list
are ones that have truly made a lasting impression on me in 2023. It was quite
a battle between Caroline and Lana for number 1, but Caroline just shaved it –
maybe the flawed beauty of Lana’s record just had slightly too many flaws?<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Favourite Albums of 2023</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">1. Towers when the understairs cupboard is cranked open and after a bit of a rummage the
dusty crystal ball is hauled out, polished, shaken around a bit and given
the opportunity to make some musical predictions for the year ahead.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It’s the annual Ones to Watch list.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">This year the list is coming a little bit later than normal.
Normally I prefer to publish it before all the big tip lists are released.
However, circumstances have not allowed that approach this time round, but
thankfully many of the artists on this list won’t be found on the likes of the
BBC Sound of 2024. There’s just 1 crossover, although the BBC Sound of list
does feature 4 artists that have featured on past Breaking More Waves Ones to
Watch lists from previous years: Olivia Dean, CMAT, Caity Baser and The Last
Dinner Party.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Unlike the BBC list this isn’t intended as one that aims to
showcase artists “with the potential for global success who will shape the
sound of the coming year.” Instead, it simply chooses 10 artists that I think
have the potential to do something exciting. For some this may be some
brilliant gigs, for others a great album or EP or two. It’s getting harder and
harder for new artists to truly break through and so trying to predict who will
achieve global success or shape the sound of the coming year is virtually
impossible.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">In some years I’ve published 10 individual posts, 1 on each
selected artist, but this year I’m keeping it short and sweet, with all 10
artists in this post together with a short piece of text and some music.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So here they are, Breaking More Waves Ones to Watch 2024</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><u><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">1. accompanied by other musicians when playing live. In their songs you can hear pop,
easy listening, jazz, classical and even a pinch of occasional soul. Rather
like the success of an artist like Laufey (who will play the Royal Albert Hall
in London next year) it seems that elements that you might usually consider as
music for an older generation are landing well with a young crowd these days.
Debut single <i>Why Don’t You Love Me?</i> came out as far back as 2019 but their debut
EP<i> How Can I Pretend</i> wasn’t released until 2022. In 2023 the band released
three songs, the beautiful <i>My Lover Is Sleeping</i>, the equally excellent soft-bop
of <i>Petals On The Moon</i> and another song <i>Remember When</i>. In 2024 the band will be
touring in February and I fully expect the band to continue on an upward
trajectory with more releases.</span></p></span><p></p><p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Picture Parlour has already featured on Breaking More Waves
and after the debut release found themselves subject to a few cynical calls of being ‘industry plants’
rather like their pals The Last Dinner Party. All I would say to these cynics is
go and see them live. Picture Parlour are the real deal. They make rock n roll
cool again. Having played their first ever live show at The Windmill in Brixton
last December and with just 2 songs out in the world the band have been turning
heads ever since with a swagger and sound that might make you think of a
female-fronted gothic Arctic Monkeys. Apparently they’re Courtney Love’s
favourite new band. Maybe they’ll become yours?</span></p>

to Wasia Project mixes pop and jazz styles to great effect. Her 2022 release
<i>Fall In Love Alone</i> has just grown and grown (nearly 220 million streams on
Spotify) and recent release <i>Dream Boy</i> has shown that she’s prepared to try
styles that aren’t necessarily flavour of the month and make them her own, in
this case bringing Bossa Nova to the fore.</span></p><p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Another band on the Ones to Watch 2024 list that have been
receiving the praises of a more famous musician is Nottingham based quartet
Divorce (as far as I am aware the dog isn't a member of the band - maybe it plays tambourine?). Rebecca Lucy Taylor of Self Esteem / Slow Club is a big fan. So am I. I’ve
seen Divorce 3 times this year and each time more people have turned up and
the reception they band receives gets better. With co-vocalists Felix
Mackenzie-Barrow and Tiger Cohen-Towell trading vocal exchanges over their mix
of country, indie and classic singer-songwriter Divorce have now released 2 Eps
and will (hopefully) continue to win new fans in 2024. a tour with
Everything Everything is next on the books and further new music will follow.</span></p>

Midlands duo Big Special have known each other for around 10 years but it’s
only recently that they formed Big Special and became one of the most exciting
new bands out there. Mixing poetic lyrics soul, spoken word, rock and punk
there’s an energy and a realism to their music which can be heard on their
debut EP <i>TREES </i>released in Dec 2023. Debut song <i>Shithouse</i> features some of
the best laughing we’ve heard on a track since <i>HAHA</i> by Charlotte Adigery (and a
good amount of the use of the F-word) whilst in <i>Desperate Breakfast </i>Joe sings
of toasting his tea in mourning for a morning come too soon – one of my
favourite lyrics this year. Big Special will be headlining the DIY Now and Next

More Waves with debut dance floor pop thrill Petrified. The former dancer
turned musician has been taking her time since that debut. In fact we had to
wait till 2023 until Mette brought more, but when she did she absolutely
delivered. The debut EP <i>METTENARRATIVE</i> gave us a better picture of her
universe. <i>Mamma’s Eyes</i> pulled in some banging dancehall beats, gospel and a
chorus to kiss your ears so that you want to do it over and over, whilst <i>Acid
Rain</i> had hyper-modern frantic production and Van Gogh brought in some
dance floor friendly soul – think early Madonna and Lizzo jamming in the club.
Having recently opened for Jessie Ware in London, Manchester and Glasgow, hopefully next year we’ll see Mette bringing her live show out as a headline
artist and more music.</span></p><p></p>

Britney Spears-like <i>Mummy</i>: “He needs a titty in his face.” Is it about a baby?
Or a man who wants a sugar-mummy? We’ll leave you to listen and decide. Either

This was the very first list:</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Marina and the Diamonds</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Mumford and Sons </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Florence And The Machine </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Alessi's Ark</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Skint and Demoralised </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>White Lies</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Giantess </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Passion Pit </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Little Boots </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">•<span style="white-space: pre;"> </span>La Roux </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It's fair to say the list was a mix of commercial hits and misses, but some of those commercial misses still produced some great songs. That pattern has pretty much followed every year since.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The Ones to Watch list is usually published in the next week or so, ahead of most other websites and the likes of the BBC Sound of List. This year, whilst this blog has been stupidly quiet (does less than 16 posts even make it an active blog?) the annual Ones to Watch list will still be posted, but due to other commitments it won’t be until mid-December. Fingers crossed all the other websites aren’t thinking of exactly the same artists I’m thinking of.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Before we get to that point though, let’s look backwards and recap last year’s tips. I think I can safely say The Last Dinner Party (or The Dinner Party as they were then known when I tipped them) was a good shot. Priestgate less so.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>1. Caity Baser</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">In summer of 2022 Caity Baser was listed as third on the bill at a BBC South Introducing night in my home city of Portsmouth at The Edge of The Wedge – a venue that holds around 100 people. Next year she’s playing Hammersmith Apollo. That’s some progress. A good year for Caity and maybe even a better one in 2024?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>2. Priestgate</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Oh dear.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">At the start of 2023 Priestgate was undoubtedly one of the most visceral and exciting new bands out there treading the boards. A new EP <i>One Shade Darker</i> arrived in early March and things looked to be going in one direction – upwards. But then there was silence, until August 2023 when it was announced that Priestgate had come to an end following the departure of one of their number.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">This was probably the shortest period between tipping a band as One to Watch to them splitting in the history of the blog. You can't win them all.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Footnote: A month later, from the ashes of Priestgate new band Velkro arose. They go again. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>3. FLO</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">R n B pop trio FLO featured on a lot of last year’s end of year lists, topping the BBC Sound of 2023 poll and winning the 2023 Brit Award for Rising Star.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Since that time they’ve had a minor hit with <i>Fly Girl</i> (featuring Missy Elliott) which charted at number 38 in the UK singles chart, released some further EPs and played a number of festivals including Glastonbury and Wireless.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">There has been no new music since July and now the question is are FLO readying themselves for an album in 2024 and do they have the momentum to keep stepping up? Time will tell.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>4. The Last Dinner Party (Previously The Dinner Party)</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I included The Dinner Party on last year’s list on the basis of seeing them play live a couple of times. At the time they hadn’t released any music.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Cut forward a few months, they renamed themselves The Last Dinner Party, released debut single<i> Nothing Matters</i> and suddenly found themselves under a weight of hype and excitement. They soon got tagged by some naysayers as ‘industry plants’ but thankfully the band had the songs, talent and attitude to rise above that. They’ve now released 4 brilliant songs, played sell out shows and their debut album <i>Prelude To Ecstasy</i>, released 2nd February next year is one of a handful of records that actually deserves the description of ‘eagerly awaited’.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>5. Ellie Dixon</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">“Whatever problems you have might be big, but Ellie Dixon's music will make you feel bigger - as big as Godzilla,” I wrote back in 2022. Ellie proved that in 2023 releasing a song called <i>Big Lizard Energy</i>. It formed part of her EP<i> In Case of Emergency</i> and with that EP Ellie toured the UK and parts of Europe in September and October playing shows in Glasgow, London, Berlin, Paris and more.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>6. Lovejoy</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">“If they keep going at the rate they are Lovejoy is going to get a lot bigger yet,” I wrote at the end of 2022.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Now with 2.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, sold out shows, 2 top 40 singles and an EP that charted at number 5 in the UK album chart as well as going top 20 in Ireland and Lithuania (!).</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I think you can say it wasn't a bad year for Lovejoy and their fans. A band that have demonstrated that old school indie sounds can still find fresh new young audiences if done right.</span><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: large;"> </span></p><p><b style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: large;"><u>7. Scene Queen</u></b></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Scene Queen is another artist that might not have achieved main stream success but has had a very good year within the rock / metal scene. Following the success of the <i>Bimbocore</i> and <i>Bimbocore Vol 2 </i>Eps in 2022 Scene Queen released tracks such as <i>18+</i>, <i>Pink Push Up Bra</i> and the country-metal hybrid <i>MILF</i> whilst playing plenty of shows. Scene Queen seems to have been particularly embraced by the UK; many of her tour dates here had to be upgraded as they sold out so quickly. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">“What remains to be learnt is if Hannah sees Scene Queen as a short-term project or something more long-term. If it’s the later and more releases / tours follow in 2023 she’ll be one to watch,” I wrote in 2022. She’s achieved exactly that.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>8. Flowerovlove</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It felt almost too early to be featuring Flowerovlove aka Joyce Cisse as One to Watch 2023 as she was only 17 years old, but she’s done a pretty good job of justifying that selection. She ends 2023 with half a million monthly listeners on Spotify, latest single <i>A Girl Like Me</i> building up a head of steam and a show at Liverpool’s Sound City festival already announced for 2024. One to watch for next year as well then?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>9. Prima Queen</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It feels like Prima Queen spent the whole of 2023 on the road. Not only did they play their own headline tour they also played a huge number of festivals including multiple slots at Glastonbury, SXSW Texas, Tramlines, Truck Y Not, Are You Listening, 2000 Trees, Kendal Calling, Mutations and Manchester Psych Festival to name just a few. They also managed time to release some new songs which can all be found on the <i>Not The Baby EP</i> released in May. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So it's safe to say 2023 was a solid year for Prima Queen. If 2024 is going to continue the upward trajectory, new songs will now need to be the order of the day.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>10. Nell Mescal</u></b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The final artist on the list last year was Irish singer Nell Mescal. At the time of being featured she had released just 2 songs. She’s trebled that now culminating with the gorgeously hooky <i>Teeth</i> this September. She also has her own upcoming headline tour starting in Ireland before moving to England, finishing at an already sold out Omeara next January. shows. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">And that was the class of 2023. Is it as it appears
or is there a silent vowel making it ‘twist’? Please send help / advise as
appropriate. Thanks.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Either way, today I’m featuring this Welsh born artist who
has been whacking out some excellent edgy, horizon searching pop music over the
last few years with her debut EP <i>TWST0001</i> dropping in the early months of 2020
during the Covid-19 pandemic.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, because twst (real name Chloe Davis) has been
around for a while I had to check that I hadn’t already featured Chloe on the
blog in the past. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It seems I had, but only in a roundabout way; a number of twst
tracks had featured on my monthly playlist in 2020 (which eventually
transformed into the New Music Weekly playlist) and I used to post about those
playlists here. However, I’ve never fully introduced Chloe and with new
material now being released plus some forthcoming live shows, this moment seems
a good time to shine the light further.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So where to start with twst? I’d recommend somewhere near
the beginning, with <i>Are You Listening?</i> a futuristic, electrifying horror-pop tune full
of bassy minimalism, Hitchcock-like <i>Psycho</i> samples and lyrics that centre on
problems of the world such as misogyny, climate change and fake news. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">From there I’d jump to most recent release <i>Catch Me
(Beautiful Fall);</i> twst's most commercial romp through the world of pop so far, if
there was an exam in bangers, <i>Catch Me</i> would get a high grade A. Written with
long-term writing partner Eden Tredwell, the credits for <i>Catch Me (Beautiful
Fall)</i> reveal that one of the producers besides twst was one Clarence
Clarity. Remember him? He first featured on this blog about 10 years ago and has
subsequently gone on to work with the likes of Rina Sawayama and Sundara Karma.
If you’ve never heard his track<i> 4GODSLUV</i> then your homework for tonight is to
listen to that. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">But before you do so, try twst and keep an eye out for 2nd
EP <i>TWST0002</i> later this year as well as forthcoming live shows which
include Swn Festival in Cardiff later this month and a headline show at The Grace
in London on 12th December.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>twst - Are You Listening?</b></span></p><p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">It’s been a fair while hasn’t it?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Does anyone even read music blogs anymore? Particularly
inactive ones that haven’t posted for a few months. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">There’s only one real way
to find out. So here we go. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Strap yourselves in, I’m grabbing your ears and
taking them for a ride. I’ve got some new music to rave about.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Starting with Fat Dog.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Not the most glamourous of names, but with a debut single
released in August (which featured on my Spotify New Music Weekly playlist) and
critics describing their live shows as ‘unforgettable’ and ‘exceedingly fun…exceedingly
strange’ Fat Dog are a name you need to put on your ‘to listen to’ and ‘to see’
lists.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Let’s go to that debut single. <i>King of the Slugs</i> clocks in with
a shape shifting, ecstatic, shot of musical hedonism that pumps away for a
hefty 7 minutes. How to describe it? Ok I’ll try. There’s some post-punk, some psychedelia,
some swirling balladeering theatrics, some rave, some rock ‘n’ roll and some twangy
John Wayne cowboy movie soundtrack in the mix. It’s the kind of tune that leave
you feeling exhausted but exhilarated at the same time. It’s sort of dirty
sounding. It's sort of intense. It’s a musical odyssey. It’s bloody brilliant.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><i>King of the Slugs</i> is also the only song I can think of that
mentions washing your clothes and makes it seem cool. Sorry Kate Bush, I love
you, but <i>Mrs Bartolozzi</i> is truly terrible.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">And that’s it. Fat Dog. Not a band for the faint hearted. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><span>If you want to ride with them, they are on tour in the UK in
October. </span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><span>For the current New Music Weekly Playlist (updated every Friday) <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=b3d2e17e246c4574">click here.</a></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Fat Dog - King of the Slugs</b></span></p>

the chances are you’ll have already come across Picture Parlour. If you haven't, then this post is for you.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">They’re a band that have been gaining traction through a
number of well received live shows played over the past year or so.
This week, after releasing their debut single and getting plenty of press coverage, they have found themselves at a
bit of a storm centred around arguments of being ‘industry plants’, the
increased visibility big management and a label backing can bring you over
others that don’t, tastemaker hype, the systemic problems of the music industry
favouring white artists, stereotypes, judging artists purely by their online
statistics / data and misogynistic attacks on female artists. The Last Dinner
Party and Wet Leg have also been used as examples in many of these debates. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Some of these arguments are easy to debunk. For example,
there’s been criticism of all of these bands seemingly ‘coming from nowhere’,
which is frankly a load of uninformed tosh. Take Wet Leg for example. Lead
vocalist Rhian had been treading the boards for some time (I posted one of her
tracks on the blog here back in 2016) and co-founder Hester had also played in
other bands such as Maybe Tuesday before Wet Leg was formed. Wet Leg had
released a DIY song <i>Girlfriend</i> on Soundcloud in 2019 which was removed,
probably when they got signed. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Likewise, arguments that Picture Parlour have
hardly any listeners on Spotify being held up as the fact they are ‘Industry
Plants’. Well, you can’t expect a band to have listeners before they have
released anything. That’s just ridiculous. And the term ‘Industry Plants’ is
utterly meaningless anyway. I'm not even sure if most music listeners care about where artists came from - they just want tunes they like. 'Authenticity' is something that seems to exist in certain rock / indie circles in the same way as the term 'real music' does. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, some of the arguments that have been put forward
online are certainly worthy of further discussion. For example, conversations around
the systemic issues in the music industry and the lack of inclusion of persons
of colour are very valid. However, unfortunately some of the people I’ve seen
online who are trying to address these issues are probably not taken as
seriously as they should be because of the way they put forward their
arguments, which to an observer such as myself can be interpreted as
aggressive, unkind and with a lack of nuance. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The argument that is the silliest of all though is the ‘they
won’t last’ argument, because for anyone who knows anything about pop music
will tell you, nobody has a crystal ball that works 100% correctly 100% of the
time. That’s the nature of the beast. Remember Suede? Back in the day they were
on the cover of Melody Maker under the slogan “The Best New Band In Britain”
before they had even released a single. 30 years on they’re still going strong,
selling out big venues and releasing excellent records. But then does anyone
remember Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong? They were another press acclaimed
band that released 3 singles that didn’t connect with the public before
disbanding. Pop is a funny old game.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So back to Picture Parlour. Yes, they are getting ‘tastemaker’
attention. Yes, they are all white. But let’s give them a chance. Just as we
should give any artist that makes you sit up and go ‘that sounds good’ a
chance. And if you don’t think they do sound good, why not spend your time
finding something else to celebrate rather than trying to kick a band down
before they have even had the chance to prove themselves?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">For the record, Picture Parlour sound like they would be
great live. Their debut single is raw, rasping and reaches for the sky. No
wonder Courtney Love has already given them the rock royalty thumbs-up. And no
it’s not a cover of The Beatles song of the same name.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

multi-venue festival where careful planning, running between stages and dodging
the queues becomes a fine art.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I managed to see 36 full performances whilst I was there and
so I thought it was time to pick a couple of acts that I saw that I haven’t
written about on the blog that hit my ‘shows potential’ button.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">First up today is Blusher. An Australian pop three piece who
remind me very much of 2012-2016 blog-wave era pop; their music is shiny, upbeat and you
can dance round your handbag to it. Someone described it to me as ‘music for
the gays’ and whilst I don’t fully agree with that level of exclusivity (after
all music is for everyone, right?) there’s undeniably a hint of a door left
open by Robyn on tracks like <i>Dead End</i> and <i>Backbone</i>. These are pulsing
electronic bops with hooky choruses and plenty of gloss in the production.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">In the live context the band switch between serious muso
types, rocking the bass and keyboards, covering MGMT in their set, to full on hands-in-the-air cool-pop goddesses, throwing in some bedroom mirror dance routines and
lyrics that celebrate the joys of dancing to forget: "One more reason to take
the floor, call the girls up and dance until he’s gone," they sing on <i>Backbone</i>. "I still want the long nights, dancing with my drunk friends," on <i>Dead End</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Their first ever UK gig in Brighton was in the neon blue lit Zahara
nightclub and it was packed with music industry delegates. It was very well received - they certainly got hips wiggling and toes tapping. A
good start here for Jade, Lauren and Miranda who are the three people who make up
Blusher. A debut EP is to follow on July 14th.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Blusher - Dead End</b></span></p><p></p>

new music festival Great Escape in Brighton in 2007, (I missed the first one in
2006) it was pretty easy to catch someone who was going to be the ‘next big
thing’ in the UK, by sheer virtue of the fact that there wasn’t a huge number
of artists to choose from. At the that time around 150 artists played in 15
venues over 3 days for your £35 ticket, so about 50 artists per day. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The festival was also predominantly a showcase for white male
UK based indie guitar bands (some of the names listed as headliners that year
were The Rakes, Art Brut and The Pigeon Detectives). You had to scroll down the
small print to spot the likes of Adele playing a small coffee shop, which
thankfully I did. It remains to this day one of my best brags when the conversation
turns to big artists that you saw in small venues.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">These days Great Escape is very different. It’s truly
international in flavour, with artists from Australia, USA, Colombia, New Zealand
and many European countries appearing (sadly this year there are no artists
from South Korea). Also, many different genres are represented, from
folk to hip-hop to pop to soul. There's even some experimental ambient stuff in a church. In total the festival showcases over 500
emerging artists in over 30 venues plus there’s a pop-up mini festival site on
the beach. Add to that the unofficial ‘alt-escape’ shows and there are probably
over 800 artists playing in Brighton next Wednesday to Saturday. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Therefore the chances of seeing ‘the next big thing’ are slim,
especially when you add in the fact that it’s now so hard as an emerging artist
to gain enough traction and audience to make music a long term career. However,
for new music fans Great Escape remains the equivalent of what Glastonbury is
to summer camping festivals. It’s the biggest and often the best. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Every year a number of people ask me for tips on who to see.
This on its own is an impossible task. Yes, whilst I have listened to every
single artist on the bill in recorded form, it doesn’t necessarily mean they
can cut it live, especially at an early stage in their career where they may
still be developing.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">However, if you’re going and don’t know where to start with so many names on the bill, here
are a few pointers of either acts I’ve already seen live and rate, or that have
caught my ear when doing my research for the festival. It’s probably not that
surprising to learn that most of these artists have already appeared on
Breaking More Waves over the last couple of years.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Here are 8 for Great Escape.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>The Last Dinner Party</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Whilst The Last Dinner Party (previously just The Dinner
Party) had already attracted a fair amount of attention (I tipped them as Ones
to Watch last year in a blog post that you can read by clicking here) it’s
since the release of their debut single Nothing Matters that the band has really
been grabbing listeners ears everywhere. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">With a whole host of very old-fashioned reference points
(David Bowie, Sparks, Queen, Fleetwood Mac) The Last Dinner Party could appeal
to those who were around when those reference points were in their prime, but
also a younger, cooler indie crowd who are perhaps getting a little bored with
yet another post-punk band with a shouty male vocalist. Having seen them live a
couple of times I can confirm that they’re a talented gang with a charismatic,
confident front woman. Don’t expect a bunch of tunes all as instantly accessible
as ‘Nothing Matters’. This is a band who sound like they could make a great
album rather than just a collection of pop singles.</span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pETz4IMmeDU" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe>
</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Mae Stephens</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">After Mae Stephens went Tik-Tok viral earlier this year with
her break out tune If We Ever Broke Up is she destined for 1 hit wonder land or
a big-time pop career? There haven’t been any further releases (why bother when
you’re still collecting streams like they are going out of fashion? 95 million
and counting for If We Ever Broke Up) and so maybe Great Escape will be our
first opportunity to see if Mae Stephens is going to be here for the longer
period or not. Worth checking out just to find some answers.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TbGT3d0pHgo" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe>
</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Prima Queen</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Louise Macphail and Kristin McFadden make up Prima Queen. They
hail from Bristol and Chicago respectively and make beautiful music that sits
somewhere on the Venn Diagram between indie, rock, country, pop and singer
songwriter. They are one of the bands I’ve seen the most in the last 12 months
and every time their music sweeps me up. I’m not sure if it’s the gorgeous
melodies or their very real storytelling that veers from sad songs that will
possibly make you cry (Butter Knife) to tunes about dating someone whilst not
really being over a previous partner (Eclipse) but whatever it is they are a
band to fall in love with. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h4Db1C6L64Q" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe>
</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Unfortunately, Prima Queen clash with The Last Dinner Party on
the timetable, so there’s a difficult choice to be made here. All I can suggest
is whoever you don’t see, you get tickets to see their own show in the
future.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>McKinley Dixon</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Unlike some of these recommendations, McKinley Dixon already
has plenty of work online, including a number of albums. A new long-player
follows this summer and his visit to Great Escape festival will give new
audiences a first chance to hear what he’s about. Inspired by everything from
Mary J Blige to OutKast to My Chemical Romance, his current EP Beloved! Paradise!
Jazz? gives a good example of his music; a glorious summer kissed flow of jazz,
hip-hop, pop and soul. He’s playing a number of shows so there’s no excuse not
to catch him at the festival.</span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xvk6h2Riyww" title="YouTube video player" width="420"></iframe></span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Vlure</u></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">If you haven’t seen Vlure live yet you are missing a trick.
Imagine the characters from Trainspotting in a nightclub dancing to Faithless and
intense rock and roll. That is the sound of Vlure – a band that give it 110% at
every live show they play. Like Prima Queen Vlure was a recent runner up at the
Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition. Vlure are one of those bands that
really only make sense when you’ve seen them live.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m3U0LG7N9Yc" title="YouTube video player" width="410"></iframe>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Caity Baser</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Another artist that appeared on the Breaking More Waves Ones
to Watch 2023 list last year, Caity Baser is a UK artist who might have found
some initial fame on Tik-Tok, but unlike many of her contemporaries she’s no
one hit wonder. Her sassy, lyrically witty pop has already won her a legion of
young fans and its starting to translate into chart positions. Last year’s ‘X&Y’
narrowly missed the top 75 in the UK at number 77 and this year’s ‘Pretty Boys’
went top 30 at number 26.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">After selling out London’s Forum, next up for Caity are a number
of summer festivals, perhaps showcasing her music to a different type of fan
than those who are currently obsessing over her as she hits the likes of Great
Escape, Latitude and Barn On The Farm. Live some of the smoothness of her records gets taken out, but you go home feeling like she's your new BFF. Look out for my favourite Friendly Sex. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/S7AdHxd0U7o" title="YouTube video player" width="410"></iframe>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Gurriers</u></b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">A few years ago one of my highlights of Great Escape was an
Irish showcase at the tiny Prince Albert pub where I caught a beautifully
intense set from The Murder Capital. This year that same showcase is in the
same venue and the potential highlight is another band bringing further force.
That band is Gurriers. If you like your guitar bands raw and rage fuelled then on
the basis of the music they’ve so far delivered, Gurriers will be for you. If
you can’t make the Prince Albert show on Thursday afternoon, they are also
playing <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Alphabet on Friday evening and
an Alt-Escape show (which non-ticket holders can attend) at Folklore Rooms on
Thursday night.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aXXpCv6NCds" title="YouTube video player" width="410"></iframe>
</span><p class="MsoNormal"><b><u><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Mickey Callisto</span></u></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">What’s not to love about a man who does big gay pop songs,
clearly models his stage presence on Freddie Mercury and on the 19th May will release an absolute banger about a nightclub called Homospace? Mickey
Callisto is the fun you’ve yet to experience but really should. He’s the
ultimate groovy space-cadet.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zma6mEtrSU0" title="YouTube video player" width="410"></iframe>
</span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">8 not enough for you?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><span>Here are a further 8 recommendations: <b>Heartworms, Debby
Friday, Bellah Mae, Venbee, Rianne Downey, Nell Mescall, Another Sky, Ttrruuces</b></span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b><u>Bonus Tip !</u></b></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">And here's a final bonus tip. If you're at the festival for the 3 full days (4 if you include the limited offerings on Wednesday night) don't just stick to the genres you like and things you know. One of the beauties of Great Escape is that there are plenty of artists playing who rarely visit this country, or may never do so again. For at least half an hour in one of the three days, choose something at random that is totally different from what you'd usually see. Maybe try some hybrid Colombian folk with London jazz and hip-hop (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqvlq2Kf8tc">Mestizo Collective</a>) or some Australian sex pop (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhNH9PomCRc">Big Wett</a>). You may hate it, you may love it, but it will expand your musical mind either way. </span></p><br /><p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Welcome to the world of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/flipt0phead/">Flip Top Head</a>, who describe
themselves as orchestral cult rock. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Their debut shape shifting song <i>Seventh Bell Number</i> was released
back in February and has hints of Black Country New Road insofar as you’re
never quite sure what it’s going to do next. Unpredictability can often be a
mess, but in this case it works. The mix of beefy trombone, guitars and the wonderfully named Bowie Bartlett’s haunting vocal that sings of giving back his eyes mix well
together. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Yet this is only their first song, so who knows what comes next? The
internet can provide clues of course, with <a href="https://youtu.be/jZGiJcvcnFQ">live footage on YouTube</a> showing that their other songs also feature the male vocals of the equally
brilliantly named Bertie Beer.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Sitting far outside the mainstream, Flip Top Head certainly
won’t be winning over lots of Ed Sheeran fans. But for those who like their
music a bit more out there, they might just be your new favourite band.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Flip Top Head - Seventh Bell Number</span></b></p><p></p>

with some degree of anxiety. I’m talking drunken men shouting at each other, fighting,
the waft of takeaway food, vomit and discarded beer bottles rolling round the floor
whilst a girl near the front of the vehicle is crying, consoled by her friends:
“He really isn’t worth it. You’re better than that darling.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Thankfully this Nightbus, a three piece from Manchester (not to
be confused with the ‘filter disco’ four piece of the same name from the
previous decade) is a far more appealing proposition. From what’s been released
so far I’d describe them as a darkly languid indie band with a heart of goth.
With the likes of new artists such as Heartworms (who they recently supported
in Brighton) currently getting a lot of attention, the kings of dark-pop The
Cure being back on the road and night-queen Siouxsie Sioux set to
return this summer, right now it’s a good time for new goth influenced bands to step out of the
shadows - even if it means that a nasty bright spotlight might shine on them.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">To pigeon-hole Nightbus as just goth is wide of the mark
though. Their debut track <i>Way Past Three</i> is dreamy and gently ethereal and starts with a guitar sound similar to The Edge from U2, whilst
new song <i>Mirrors</i> throws ghostly shapes not dissimilar to a less taunt Joy
Division with its chugging bassline and haunting synths. What is certain though
is that whilst their music would sound great on your headphones late at night
on the sodium lit bus ride home, their world is not one of kebabs and drunk
fighting, but one of moody indie-art-pop, ready to hypnotise you. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Nightbus consists of Olive Rees, Zac Melrose and Jake
Cottier. You can catch them live supporting Iceage in Manchester tomorrow
night.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Nightbus - Mirrors</b></span></p><p></p>

As the likes of Mumford & Sons found
themselves headlining the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, it seemed that every
indie leaning musician out there was ditching the guitars, growing a beard, buying
a waist coat, stomping round the haystacks and getting to grips with the banjo.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">As with any musical fashion, that wave eventually broke.
Even Mumford & Sons reinvented themselves as a rather boring stadium rock band
and charity shops noticed an increase in waistcoat donations.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So, when a group comes along that could have quite easily
fitted into that indie-folk gang back in 2009 you might give a little shudder.
But don’t. Because Limerick three-piece Kingfishr make powerfully brilliant
songs, and that’s what’s important, irrespective of genre, fashion or
prejudice.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Kingfishr consist of Edmond Keogh, Eoghan McGrath and Eoin
Fitzgibbon and they embrace Ireland’s love of traditional music that is passed
down from generation to generation (banjo player McGrath is part of the
National Folk Orchestra of Ireland). However, the band add the sort of muscle
that rock fans will enjoy – their songs well up with the sort of punch the air
euphoria that someone like Bruce Springsteen achieves. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">This is best heard on the third and most recent song they’ve
released – <i>Heart In The Water</i>, which is full of moving and sky scraping weight .
Of the song the band say: “Resentment is a powerful emotion. Looking back at
all the things you could have had had or done, and realising you won’t get
those moments back is hard to take. <i>Heart In The Water</i> is about learning from
paths not taken.” <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Listen to Kingfishr below and once again celebrate the
banjo.</span><o:p></o:p></p><b>Kingfishr - Heart In The Water</b><p></p>

chart-bound pop musician on these pages. Recently the focus has been on louder,
edgier alternative acts or left of centre singer songwriter types. So, let’s
address that right now by waving hello to Bellah Mae who says of herself: “I
overshare my life in all my songs and then let the world listen, so welcome to
the Hot Ex Girlfriends Club”. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">With a couple of singles under her belt, Bellah (short for
Isabella) is already showing lots of promise as a potential hit maker. First
there was break up jam <i>Boyfriend Of The Year</i> (a pop tune with a slightly U.S rock
attitude and the only one where you’ll probably hear the mention of carbonara
of in the lyrics) and then the follow up, the <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><i>Drama King</i>, which finds Bellah singing to her
slightly pathetic and obsessive boyfriend: “You follow Instagram models, one
after the other, but god forbid I follow back my best friends brother.” <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Whilst they’re both bops a deeper perspective on what Bellah
is probably about can be heard on a different version of Boyfriend of the Year titled
the (Sadder) version. Here there’s a nod to Taylor Swift in its style. Just like
Taylor Bellah has a bit of a country background, having done some ground-work in
Nashville when she was just 17 before signing a record deal.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><span>If you’re a fan of
Taylor, Olivia Rodrigo or Miley Cyrus you’ll find a lot to like here. As with virtually
everything featured on these pages it’s early days, but I’m certainly not
betting against Bellah Mae right now.</span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Bellah Mae - Boyfriend Of The Year</b></span></p><p></p>

More Waves New Music Weekly playlist <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=fc727fa4ed0745b2">(here</a>) you’ll have no doubt heard the mesmerizing song <i>Red Wine</i> by Irish singer Sal that opens proceedings.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The independent Cork based songwriter has released just a handful of songs under this name, <i>Red Wine</i> being her fourth following last year’s
<i>Bullet In The Head</i>, <i>Everything</i> and <i>Merry Go Round</i>. It’s a stop-you-in-your-tracks
country lullaby and deserves to be heard by a far
bigger audience than the 773 monthly listeners she currently has on Spotify. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">A
little bit of digging reveals that this isn’t Sal’s first musical project; she’s recorded and released as Sara Ryan since 2016, was named New
Artist of the Year at the Irish Folk Awards back in 2017 and released an album
in 2019. That was in the past though and what excites most is her new material
and in particular <i>Red Wine - </i>a song that casts the most magnetising of spells. The irony is that the song is about the difficulty of letting go - something you'll probably find is hard to do with a tune as alluring as this.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Her other material still maintains a hint of country, but
there’s elements of pop and softer rock as well; if you like music by the likes
of Natalie Imbruglia or the song <i>Kiss Me</i> by Sixpence None The Richer then Sal’s
melodic ways are guaranteed to charm you. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Having worked through a number of support slots with various Irish musicians, Sal has a few small headline
shows of her own coming up through March in Ireland (including one in a

of music, something that probably isn’t that important to anyone else, but as
the writer of an occasionally posting new music blog these are the sort of things I think about. Imagine being my partner and the exciting discussions I bring to the table: "So, if you've never heard The Beatles before, are they a new band? Are their songs new music?"<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Today’s new band are pretty damn new by most definitions.
After all they released their debut single today. Or are they?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">A quick consultation with the internet tells us that they’re not quite the fresh-faced teenage discovery I thought they might
be. For Miss Tiny is actually producer / guitarist record label owner Dan Carey
(Wet Leg, Fontaines DC, Honeyglaze, Kae Tempest etc) and vocalist / drummer
Benjamin Romans-Hopcraft from Childhood and Warmduscher. They’ve been friends
for many years and originally formed the band together under the terrible name What It’s Like To
Be A Rat, debuting at Brixton Windmill last year. Having deemed that name “too
evil sounding” they’ve become Miss Tiny, after a nickname to Benjamin’s
grandmother who passed away during recording.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><span>The aforementioned debut single from Miss Tiny is called <i>The Sound</i> (no it's not a cover of The 1975 song) and is streaming below in video form. It is
best described as a slow-motion lo-fi scuffed up around the edges take on <i>Peter Gunn</i>. It’s not a one off, but the first take from a bigger
project of which no doubt we’ll hear more soon. But for now get your groove on
to this dirty and enjoyably unpleasant beast.</span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Miss Tiny - The Sound</b></span></p><p></p>

that the lightning does indeed strike more than once, because Gurriers are the next band
from those shores to hit with a vicious and venomous thwhack <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Official debut single <i>Approachable</i> was released this week.
It has the same sort of ferocious firepower that those early Fontaines DC
singles possessed – think <i>Hurricane Laughter</i> with even ballsier vocals. They
sound like the sort of band that would send bodies flying everywhere in a
sweaty pub, volume cranked up, beers flying. Tender and beautiful? Most definitely not. Intensely raw and thrilling? That’s more like it.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Gurriers consist of Emmet White, Ben O’Neill, Mark
MacCormack, Pierce Callaghan and vocalist Dan Hoff who has described <i>Approachable</i>
as being: “A tongue in cheek anthem about the rising far right rhetoric all
over the world.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

is an intoxicating mix of slightly funky, goth-tinged post-punk electronica. Does
that do it for you? If it does and you aren’t familiar yet, it’s time to get
acquainted with Heartworms.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I’ve been waiting for the right time to feature Heartworms
on the blog since first hearing very positive things about her set at last year’s
Great Escape festival in May and the subsequent release of debut single
<i>Consistent Dedication</i> in September. Now with a truly excellent spikey second song <i>Retributions
Of An Awful Life</i> out in the world, today seems a good time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Heartworms is one Jojo Orme. Jojo spent her youth in Gloustershire
but has now relocated to London. Having signed up to Dan Carey’s Speedy
Wunderground label (Carey is also on production duties) her debut EP <i>A Comforting Notion</i> follows in late March.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Before the EP we get <i>Retributions Of An Awful Life</i>. It’s
intensely immense - the sort of song that threatens to grab you by both shoulders
and shake you until your bones break. Yet despite the pain, it's a pleasurable experience. There’s a suitably full-on cold looking video as well
(shot in black and white of course). Watch it below and add Heartworms to your list
of new favourite artists.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Heartworms - Retributions Of An Awful Life</b></span></p><p></p>

Watch (<a href="https://breakingmorewaves.blogspot.com/search/label/Ones%20to%20Watch%202023">here</a>) and a few end of year lists it’s about time this blog got its act
together for the new year and put a few posts online, right?<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">For the time being the format remains the same; introducing new or relatively new artists, not too many posts to clog up your feed and only one
about each. Effectively each post is the musical equivalent of a tinder one night stand; but if you
want you can have a long lasting relationship with the artist; the choice is yours. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Let’s start with Connie Campsie. You can see her in the picture above, staring up at the sky on what looks like the top of a concrete multi-storey car park.
What is she thinking I wonder? Has she lost her car? Can she not remember what
level it’s parked on? Or is there a really good view from up there? Or is she just thinking the most British of thoughts: "Looks like rain and I haven't got my bloody coat."<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Now just in case you’re confused, yes this is the second British relatively young and new Connie in music with a surname that begins with C in the last few years. The other is Connie Constance, who to be fair isn’t that new now having been doing the
rounds since 2015. Also, although the surname isn't a C, a quick shout out to Connie Talbot who was the runner up on the very first series of Britain's got talent in 2007 - remember the sweet little girl singing <i>Somewhere Over The Rainbow</i>. Except she's now 22 and a fully grown adult. Which if you're like me just seems wrong. In my head she will forever be that small child.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">But before I go to far off at a tangent, back to Connie. It’s
a cool name in my books. So cool one of my daughters is named as such.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Returning to the real subject of this blog post: Connie Campsie. Connie released a couple of
songs in 2021, a couple in 2022 and has just last week dropped <i>Uneasy</i>, a tune which
will feature on her debut EP <i>I’m Still Talking To Myself </i>out in February. It’s
my favourite so far, a really intimate piece that floats to your ears with a gentle caress
that whispers ‘I’m a beauty.’ Hints of Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor
Swift sweep through Connie Campsie’s music, so if that's your thought of thing, add Connie Campsie to your list.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The very sharp amongst you will of course be shouting at
your screens that Connie has put out music even before that though. Prior to
recording under her full name she released some songs under the name Campsie
(now deleted from streaming services) and before that if you cast your mind
back to 2017 and you may recall a band that featured on these pages called
<a href="https://breakingmorewaves.blogspot.com/2017/05/new-music-introducing-sugarhouse.html">Sugarhouse</a>. They had a delightful indie pop tune called <i>Love Anyone Else</i>
that brimmed with the joys of young romance. “It will probably make you want to
start a fanzine. Or a record label. Or a music blog. Or just give someone a big
hug – maybe even a kiss,” I said at the time. One of the vocalists in that band
was one Connie Craven Campsie. Yes the same Connie Campsie who features here
now. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Connie’s dropped the Craven bit (her mother is Beverley
Craven – the Brit award winning Beverley Craven who had two top 5 albums in the 90’s)
and just taken her father’s surname to release under. But don’t hold the famous
parent against her, except to say that the talent is clearly in the genes as
her latest songs demonstrate – they’re the most mature and compelling she’s
released so far and so for that reason Connie is our first ‘new’ artist of 2023.</span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Connie Campsie also features on this week's Breaking More Waves New Music Weekly playlist, which you can find by <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0DIhVpCH0TnzOGJSyPJC9v?si=ee391aad39544d79">clicking here</a> or searching New Music Weekly on Spotify.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>Connie Campsie - Uneasy</b></span></p><p></p>

I managed to catch in the order of 340 live performances.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So without further ado this is a list of my favourite 10 gigs of 2022.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>1. Sofi Tukker - London</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Moments after the gig I tweeted: "The energy from the crowd at Sofi Tukker tonight was insane. Sweaty, joyous and full of love. It verged on religious. Incredible." That sums up what was not just one of my favourite gigs, but one of the best couple of hours of my 2022.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>2. Chvrches - London</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I've seen Chvrches many times now but this was a peak. Add in Robert Smith of The Cure (one of my favourite all time bands) as a special guest and call me more than satisfied.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>3. Ttrruuces - Bognor Regis</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">My 'Why have I not seen this band before?' moment. Also my pop-music-making-me-tearful moment.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>4. Gabriels - Brighton</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">I'd read so many things about the elated state Gabriels could leave you in. Those writers were correct. A captivating and soulful live performance. Go see them if you get the chance.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>5. Lorde - London</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Lorde's 3rd album from 2021 continued to grow on me in 2022 and the beautiful live show complete with her staircase to the sun was aesthetically one of the most inventive I saw in 2022.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>6. Rosalia - London</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Rosalia isn't a household name in the UK, but elsewhere she's a huge pop star. She spoke of dreams of playing the Royal Albert Hall when she was young, so performing at the 20,000 capacity O2 was mindblowing for her. Thankfully it felt like every Spaniard in London had turned up and the show was packed. The Brits missed out here; an incredibly charismatic, funny, cheeky, sexy, weird, original and (despite the venue size) personal show from the woman who has also made my favourite album of 2022. And what a voice!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>7. Gang of Youths - Kingston</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">This album release show for Banquet Records may have been the shortest gig I went to on this list of 10, but from the off it was exhilarating, with lead singer Dave L'aupepe heading straight into the crowd within seconds of taking to the stage. They may normally play much bigger venues, but The Fighting Cocks pub in Kingston was a perfect punch.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>8. Priestgate - Brighton</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">One of the most exciting new bands I saw in 2022. "And the award for best new frontman at Mutations Festival goes to Priestgate," I tweeted after witnessing Rob Schofield's Iggy Pop referencing performance.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>9. Kathryn Joseph - Reading</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">In a church in Reading Kathryn Jospeh was funny, bewitching, potty-mouthed and beautiful. The highlight of this year's Are You Listening Festival.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;"><b>10. The Cure - London</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">One of my favourite bands of all time playing a 2 and a three quarter hour long set that included <i>Friday I'm In Love, Pictures of You, Push, In Between Days, Lovesong </i>and many more including a bunch of songs from the (hopefully / finally) soon to be released new album. What's not to like?</span></p><p><b><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">Sofi Tukker - Wet Tennis</span></b></p>

Maybe in a year from now they'll mean very little to me, being just moments of musical infatuation. Or maybe the relationship with these songs will develop into a longer lasting love. Long term partners, with you forever or dirty passionate one night stands? Both have their merits. Time here is the key to resolving what happens and at the moment it's too early to tell.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">So here's the list. No commentary on the songs except to say yes, there
are 2 Harry Styles tracks in the top 10. To be honest I didn’t think as much of the album as some critics did,
but these two tunes are the dogs b*llocks.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: trebuchet; font-size: medium;">The top 3 could all really be 1st equal, but I’m
putting Hazel English first, just because <i>Hamilton</i> has less streams on Spotify than
the other two, and if even one of you reading this goes and listens to it after seeing this list, my job is done. That's a double for Hazel English now having previously topped my Albums of 2020 list.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
