Pocket Sun - I Lost Track

When you put the words pop music and exercise together what do you think of? Kraftwerk’s Tour De France? The re-recorded version of Everybody Wants To Rule The World called Everybody Wants To Run The World? Fitness by Lizzo? Or do you, like me, think of Olivia Newton John’s classic Physical video with those tiny briefs, muscles, tans and a fat man winning the day? (Sorry Dua Lipa, your song Physical is good as well, but Olivia wins on a technicality because of the video).

Whatever you think of, here’s a new one to add to your list. I’ve written about the rather gorgeous synthwave sounds of Pocket Sun before and here they are with a dreamy piece of pop loveliness; it’s the sort of song that will surely morph even the most hardened rock fan into a marshmallow mush of romanticism.

I Lost Track is a Covid-19 lockdown tune of separation but also hope: “Missing your hello, missing your goodbye, things won't change, unless we wait it out alone. But some day it will end.”

“But what about the exercise?” I hear you shout. That comes in the video which finds Gina from the band breaking out into her own quarantine aerobic routine – watch out Joe Wicks. Whilst there might not be any body builders accompanying her here, there is at least a naked blow up man, which given social distancing rules is probably a fairly decent effort. You can get the tune on Bandcamp by clicking here.

New Music: Pocket Sun - Tightly

I first introduced Pocket Sun to the pages of Breaking More Waves last month with their debut track Plastic and now it’s time to drift away with them again as we catch their second song to be released from their forthcoming EP Sleep Inventions due May 17th. It’s called Tightly.

The sound here is perhaps unlike the title; it's less constricting and tight but more snug, like a belated Indian Summer where you’ve spent all day dozing in the hammock without realising. Pocket Sun’s music doesn’t grab you, instead it sidles up to you gracefully and just nestles into your ear comfortably. Add in lyrics about ‘floating on the waves of you’ and ‘a body needs a sun’ and the dreamy and tranquil textures of the music are accentuated even more.

To accompany the track there’s a spacey-fruity video which you can see below.

Pocket Sun is the project of an artist who goes by the name of GMT from Bristol who has assembled a 5 piece to embrace her vision. Behind the scenes Pocket Sun have been working on a live show, which will see the light of day this year - catch them at all the best venues and emerging music festivals soon.

Introducing: Pocket Sun

When this blog was in its infancy dreamy, blissful, spaced out electronic pop seemed to be everywhere, but particularly in America. Times have changed since that time, but every now and then a new artist or band will crop up who could have very easily fitted in with those lavish sounds of 2009-2011.

Today I’m introducing one such act. Except this lot aren’t from some laid-back Californian town, instead they’re from Bristol, UK.  They’re called Pocket Sun and they use synths and electronics to make songs that sound like the computer techies in the office have been on a holiday to a sun-drenched resort and come back with a bit more of a relaxed groove about them. If the sound Pocket Sun make was the blog sound of 2010, with a few years removed and less hype it still sounds celestially lovely.

Debut single Plastic is a technicolour pop song of perfection. It doesn’t leap out and shout in your face; it’s more subtle than that. But once the “sending signals into the sky” hook and melodic charms weave their way into your head you’ll probably want to float away somewhere all together more astral as well.

It’s very early days for Pocket Sun – Plastic only came out on Friday – but once their debut EP (due for May release) is out and everyone has heard more of their warm, bleached out electronic songs it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we’re all drifting away with them. A fine way to start your musical week.
