The Colourist - We Won't Go Home (Video)

Californian quartet The Colourist smashed the internet last year with a bunch of blog adored songs such as Little Games, Fix This and Yes Yes (including some appreciation from Breaking More Waves). Now there’s a video for the song We Won’t Go Home which was originally included on the bands Lido EP. It  features the band playing in front of some faded and hazy scenes whilst blasting out their indie-power pop.

We Won’t Go Home is muscular enough to stand the test against rock dudes, but full of the sort of perkiness and lyrical simplicity to stand a chance with the pop kids as well (not of course that all pop songs have to have simple lyrics). Oh, and any band that has a singing drummer in the style of Phil Collins (although not as bald) gets our vote. 

For now The Colourist don't have any UK gig dates scheduled (can someone sort that out please?) so we'll just imagine how joyful this song would be as a set closer, all bouncing, moshing and frugging at the front but still plenty of vigorous head nodding and occasional bursts of dancing at the back, before everyone joins in with the final chanted chorus as the band leave the stage.

The Colourist - Yes Yes

When we introduced The Colourist as a ‘new wave’ last month their song Little Games had just a few hundred plays on Soundcloud, yet now it’s picked up an impressive 100,000+ and all sorts of adoration from all sorts of places. We’d love to claim that this was all because of Breaking More Waves but of course it’s not. No, Little Games grew from small shoots to be one of those blog frenzy Hype Machine conquering tracks, for the simple reason it sounds like a great feel good summer hit and plenty of bloggers could recognise that, even if in our own country it’s supposedly spring and feels like winter. 

Whilst we fancied ourselves as a proper on the case blogger with Little Games, picking up on the track just hours after its release, we’re a little later to the party with Yes Yes which has been floating around  the world wide web for a few days now and is working its way up the Hype Machine charts. Whilst sometimes it is nice to be first to post (we wrote about why we’re not ashamed to admit that here) it’s also not something that bothers us and we’re pretty sure it doesn’t bother you our average reader (not that we’re saying you’re average – every one of our readers is very special and unique – if we could take you all to dinner and then back to ours after for ahem 'coffee', we really would). So here it is. Avid blog / Hype Machine followers will have already heard it, but a lot of people won’t. 

Yes Yes continues where Little Games left off, with more energy than Usain Bolt and more hooks than Mohammad Ali. It’s the kind of thing that you’d expect to crop up on a Kitsuné label compilation; namely sprightly indie pop that (if you are like us) will make you smile and dance like you've just won the lottery. Say yes again to The Colourist.

Look. For a moment let’s forget about w*nking over our favourite Radiohead b-sides and just accept the fact that sometimes there’s nothing wrong with a group making music that’s chirpily sweet, has happy as heaven melodies and is throwaway radio friendly as it’s possible to be. The Colourist is such a band. They’re pleasurable on the ears and you can dance to them as well. If you can’t deal with that then we suggest you climb back up your anal passage and wallow there on your own.

Consisting of Adam Castilla, Maya Tuttle, Justin Wagner and Kollin Johannsen out of Orange County, California, The Colourist have just two songs on Soundcloud, although they put out some others (Yes Yes and Oh Goodbye) that have now been taken down. The song that’s grabbed us hook line and sinker is called Little Games. With its choppy guitars and boy girl harmonies it’s just screaming to soundtrack to smiling faces, couples kissing, summertime and running off down to the beach feeling great about life. We could also envisage this song soundtracking an advert and we don't mean that in any negative way, it's just one of those songs. Do you really need to know any more than that? The Colourist seems a perfect name – they’re painting musical rainbows.
