Aiden Grimshaw - Curtain Call

If you follow us on twitter you’ll probably be aware that every now and then we like to sound our Aiden Grimshaw klaxon. Today that electric horn is blaring louder than ever before for the lad's new single Curtain Call. For Curtain Call is THE ONE.

To summarise, it's a hugely impressive pop single.

Initially we find Grimshaw singing despondently over a monastic backing about how the booze has run dry and the only liquid left is the rain before the song surges up and sticks its tongue fully down your throat with a soulful hook from Labrinth’s sister Sherelle McKenzie. The chorus has that same euphoric lift to it as something from Moby’s huge selling Play album.  It’s one of those moments when you have to take a step back and go “X-Factor contestant? Really ?” Yes really. You can argue about context, authenticity and PR campaign repositioning (which in the purest sense of being a music fan shouldn’t affect how we listen to music, but in reality probably does, even if subconsciously) till the cows come home, but ultimately music should only ever be about one thing – an emotional response.  Curtain Call, the final track (it couldn’t really go anywhere else could it?) on Grimshaw’s better-than-you-might-expect forthcoming album, gives us that response. It makes us go wow.

think i may have to unfollow this blog now. i come to sites like this to read about music. X Factor contestants are NOT musicians, and to class them as artists in an insult to every hard working band and musician out there!

I think there's much to be said about the cakewalk that is not suceeding in X Factor then trying to re-establish yourself as a "real" artist.
