We’ve said it before, but Coasts’ Modern Love is a bit of a BANGER. The good news is that you will soon be able to get a bit of that in your life when it’s finally released for your retail pleasure on 27th April.
To celebrate the fact, the band has enlisted RAC to remix the track. Coming soon remixes by the AA and Green Flag perhaps? Apologies to anyone who has no idea what we’re talking about, hopefully this will explain (here). For those expecting the banger-a-thon to continue, you might be a little disappointed; but then could Modern Love get much bigger than the original? We doubt it. Instead you get a slice of ebullient dance pop served up complete with some cut up ‘oh-oh-oh’ vocal samples similar to something you might hear on a Chvrches or Purity Ring record – and that’s perfectly agreeable with us.
In addition to their London Koko show on June 20th the band has just announced a new tour. All the dates are in cities or towns by rivers or coasts. You’ll find them in Sunderland, Hull, Liverpool, Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Ramsgate and Southend, full details on this link.
Coasts - Modern Love (RAC Remix)
Last year when we put Coasts on our Ones to Watch for 2015 list we suggested that they were the only band with an indie guitar sound on the list. Take one listen to Modern Love, their first new material of 2015, and then if you want give us a good dressing down. For this tune (or should we say TUNE) has more than a smidgen (OK a massive whack) of big-pop / rave euphoria about it. This is less skinny jeans, black t-shirts and skulking around the pub with a pint of cider than brightly coloured vests, gold glittery dresses and firework explosions out of neon-glow rockets at the nightclub labelled fun.
Basically it’s a banger and deserves to be all over daytime radio. This is why we named them on that list.
Coasts - Modern Love
In a Ones to Watch 2015 list that this year focuses heavily on solo artists, Bristol born five piece Coasts are the first (and only) indie rock band to be listed. Having formed in 2011 Coasts have been on a gradual upward trajectory due to their ability to deliver hooky anthems that sit very comfortably in the collections of those who own records by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Saint Raymond, Sons & Lovers and Foals. Songs such as Oceans (4,000,000+ plays on Soundcloud and counting) and A Rush Of Blood have become not only firm internet favourites, but the band have developed a decent live following as well. Next year they’ve already been confirmed for SXSW in Austin, Texas and with their big sound we can easily imagine Coasts being adored at 2015’s UK summer festivals. Their debut album is scheduled for 2015 and let's face it, as a blog called Breaking More Waves, based by the sea, we had to include a band called Coasts on this list didn't we?

Wash Away, the second track to be streamed from Coasts forthcoming EP, is top-notch. Sounding like an incoming storm, this rattles with a pleasingly explosive epic-indie sound that comes with a stamp on it marked 'designed for big venues.'
However, we can't let them get away with just a good tune. There's a matter of some lyrics:
“Our Days are lost in a summer haze, our voices soft in the twilight gaze, like an orange peel, you give me the sweetest feel.”
Sorry Coasts, but we have a fruit related issue with this.

Making you feel sweet?
Isn’t orange peel a bit tart rather than sweet? Bitter sweet, we'd give you that, but not just sweet.
Maybe a re-write is required. How about:
“Your sex appeal, gives me the sweetest feel.”
Or something that is actually sweet:
“Like a wagon wheel, you give me the sweetest feel.”
Mmmm….. Wagon Wheels….. all that jam, chocolate and marshmallow. Lovely.
Coasts - Wash Away
Coasts look pretty happy with themselves don’t they? And so they should be. Because their ‘new’ single is pretty stupendous.
It has nothing to do with that Coldplay album, but A Rush Of Blood shows a similar sense of ambition to Chris Martin and co. It’s big. Very big. Which probably means we should be using a word like gigantic, whopper or heavyweight, but we quite like the word big, after all we don’t want to get too bloated and carried away. If you’re a fan of soaring indie rock (take Sons & Lovers as a reference point with a hint of Foals in the guitar picking plus the accessibility of a band like The 1975), then A Rush Of Blood is going to exactly your thing.
The tune was originally released earlier this year but this version found the band joining forces with producers Mike Spenser (Rudimental/Alex Clare) and James Rushent (Does It Offend You Yeah) to re-work and revamp the song and the results are impressive. The track comes from the bands forthcoming EP which you can pre-order here and you can catch the band on a tour that takes in a fair few English cities plus Glasgow in late November / December, including Breaking More Waves home city of Portsmouth.
