Alice Jemima - Driving Home For Christmas

Following on from yesterday’s immaculate version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Curxes, today we present our second cool yule track, which is once again being premiered here on Breaking More Waves and is offered up as a free download for a limited time as a present to readers. The wonderful Alice Jemima takes on Chris Rea’s Driving Home For Christmas and stamps (albeit softly) her own style all over the song. Uncomplicated guitar work, simple beats and little flourishes of keyboards join with Alice’s unmistakable girlish vocals to give you a little bit of a fuzzy feeling, rather like having a couple of glasses of mulled wine by a crackling open fire.

As well-known as this song is now, the original version failed to chart in the UK Top 40 when it was first released in 1988, but eventually made it to 33 in 2007.

Alice Jemima (who like Curxes was named as one of our Ones to Watch 2013) is no stranger to the odd cover version, having in the past recorded songs by Lana Del Rey, Rihanna and electronic pop group Strangers. And it was Strangers who returned the favour by inviting Alice to sing with them in London recently. Tonight she’s back in London playing alongside Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Lulu James at The House of Barnabas playing a special show curated by Radio 1 DJ and Bestival / Camp Bestival organiser Rob da Bank. Alas as yet Lana and Rihanna haven’t come knocking for a live duet, but there’s still time.

Curxes - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Is it too early for a musical mince pie? We think not. The bah humbug cynics amongst you may say there’s no such thing as a great Christmas song, but over the next three days here at Breaking More Waves we hope to prove the grumpy Santa bashers wrong, albeit what we're offering is full of melancholy.

Let us be one of the earliest to wish you a very Happy Christmas and offer you a gift of goodness from dark electronic kids Curxes. It’s the first song from a new set of Christmas covers recorded by different artists that we're premiering on Breaking More Waves over the next three days. We’re calling them Christmas Waves Volume 1. And until the download limit is reached you can grab each one for absolutely free.

Having been named as one of the artists on the Blog Sound of 2013 poll yesterday alongside the likes of Daughter, Haim, Savages and Chvrches, Curxes celebrate by presenting this exquisitely beautiful version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. It shows a very different side of the band from what you may have heard previously. Gone are the industrial clatters and sonic synth aggressions; instead there’s a sense of intimacy and from the heart emotion, accentuated by the staggering sensual warmth of Roberta Fidora’s vocal which is strong without falling into the Florence / Jessie J school of warbling and intimate without falling into the breathy Ellie Goulding/ Gabrielle Aplin camp.

If we could marry a voice it would probably be this one. Happy Christmas. You can download the track for free from the Soundcloud player below. If you choose to do so we simply ask that to show your thanks to the band you go the Curxes facebook page (here) and click like or click the love heart by the track on Hype Machine.

We’ll be back tomorrow with another never heard before Christmas cover for you to enjoy.

The Blog Sound of 2013

Today Breaking More Waves, together with a number of its UK blog peer group is delighted to announce the long list of artists nominated for the Blog Sound of 2013 poll. The final results and most voted for act will be announced on January 3rd 2013.

The Blog Sound Poll was first published last year and its participating voters are solely UK music bloggers. The concept of the poll wasn’t to criticise the established BBC Sound of list (which is due next Monday), but simply an experiment to see if UK music bloggers could come up with its own list of emerging artists that was representative of some of their community (it will never represent all bloggers - there's too much wide ranging taste out there), as well as giving the artists that were nominated some extra publicity. Indeed the idea was to compliment the BBC list in many ways by providing an alternative to compare and contrast, although of course there was (and still is) the risk that the same artists will be nominated for both polls. Last year 2 of the artists on the Blog Sound Poll (Lianne La Havas and Friends) also made the BBC Sound of list.

However, last year’s final long list provided some interesting alternatives to the BBC list; most notably it included Alt-J, this year’s Mercury Prize winners. We won’t deny a small amount of smug glee about the blog scene getting that one over the BBC list.

The Blog Sound of 2013 poll has expanded with 49 UK blogs nominating their 5 favourite emerging artists. The full list of participating blogs can be found at the bottom of this article. Just over 170 acts received nominations and the winning act received votes from around 25% of all bloggers. Of the 5 acts Breaking More Waves chose, 3 of them have made the final 15 – Chvrches, Curxes and Haim. These are all bands that we’ve been heavily supporting over the last year and we’re pleased to see that other bloggers agree with our tastes.

The long list represents the very best of new music and draws from major label, indie label and completely unsigned acts. The likes of Haim may be featuring on a lot of new music tip lists at the moment, but bands such as Curxes and Randolph’s Leap are more specific to the Blog Sound poll, being artists that have little or no financial / PR support to help raise their profile. It’s these artists that we’re most excited to see featured, showing that bloggers voted for the music they truly love, not just because they think the bands in question are going to be the ‘next big thing’ – often a criticism of end of year polls. Guessing 'next big things' is a often a fools game anyway, because nobody can tell what the unpredictable path of pop has round the corner.

It’s also fascinating to see Daughter getting nominated as they also featured on last years poll. However with the debut album not due till next year it seems that maybe bloggers were a little too early in their nominations last year, but haven’t lost faith in Daughter over the course of 2012.

And so here are this year’s Blog Sound of 2013 long list nominees, 15 emerging artists that UK bloggers would like to draw your attention to. We hope you find something that you like amongst them. Click on their names to hear their music. In total 11 of the artists on the list have featured in some form on Breaking More Waves before, so for completeness we’re streaming the other four artists we haven’t featured before at the bottom of the post.

Polly Scattergood - Disco Damaged Kid

Amidst twinkling piano notes, some 70’s disco pulses and what sounds like a submarine sonar, Mute recording artist Polly Scatergood has returned with Disco Damaged Kid, a low key release as a taster for her second full length, to be released next year.

Polly’s debut album was a disturbingly vulnerable piece of work with themes of suicide, dark relationships and insecure sexual desire. Yet this time it seems she’s not singing of slashing her wrists or being called a whore, instead she’s thrown away her neediness and developed at least a bit of composure and strength; even when a relationship hasn’t worked out. “Just leave I wish you well, it wasn’t our fault that the skyline fell, couldn’t breathe, tried to speak, we kept on, we kept on running with chains around our feet” she sings. Elsewhere she adds lyrics about “don’t need saving” and “I feel safe,” which seems almost an about turn from the first record, she even vocalises this change explaining in the song that she doesn’t know herself that well these days.

In terms of the music, Disco Damaged Kid sounds more expansive and easier to listen to than the unsettling songs on her debut and has raised our interest considerably. Our anticipated albums 2013 list is already getting pretty long.

Polly will be road testing some of her new material on a small tour of venues in the south over the next few days starting tomorrow night in Breaking More Waves home town of Portsmouth (expect a few tweets from that here) at the Cellars, where she’ll be supported by one of our Ones to Watch for 2013 Curxes. The gigs finish in London at Madame Jo Jo’s on December 11. Keep an eye out for more material next year from Polly and more from Curxes as we progress into the forthcoming week on the blog.
