Spring King - New Waves

Look mamma, I love you, but you’ve got to let me live my life,” sang a spikey haired 80’s synth star a long time ago; one of the few pop songs we can think of that name checks mums alongside Mum’s Gone To Iceland (number 34 in the UK charts) by Bennett and of course chart topper Mama by The Spice Girls.

Let’s face it singing about your mum isn’t very rock ‘n’ roll is it? But then these days an ever growing proportion of music isn’t very rock ‘n’ roll. The worldwide recession doesn’t seem to have galvanised a new anger amongst musicians and their respective industry peers, but a new form of risk aversion. Which is perhaps why now it’s OK for a band that on the face of it sound quite boisterous to call their song Mumma.

Manchester’s Spring King first cropped up on our radar just two days ago when a couple of blogs run by music industry types posted the song within a few hours of each other. A quick press on play and we heard instantly why the song is coming out as a single in March via Transgressive. It’s a pogo with a cider in hand romp through Modern Life Is Rubbish Blur (or their lesser musical cousins the Kaiser Chiefs) with some early Arcade Fire piano bashing at warp speed three hundred. It’s rowdy, it’s shouty, it’s easy to yell along to and it would easily have the Spice Girls (who are now of course mums) in a fight.
