Chvrches - Bela Lugosi's Dead

When we named Chvrches The Bones Of What You Believe as our favourite album of 2013 we stated that we could imagine them writing a particularly good score for a horror film soundtrack due to the sinister menace that some of their synth sounds. Little did we know then that whilst they haven’t gone the whole hog with their own soundtrack, they were about to contribute a cover to a film which in title at least contains something potentially scary; namely Vampires. However judging by the trailers (here , here, and here) it appears that Vampire Academy is basically just a Hogwarts meets Twilight high school movie that certainly won’t be winning any Oscars.

Chvrches contribution to Vampire Academy is a cover of the noir classic Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus which seems to have brought out the goth contingent from their dark slumbers to comment on Soundcloud. “This is god-awful have you ever listened to the original?” asks one listener. Is it really that bad? Not to our ears, not at all. This is Chvrches taking the song and putting their style to it, although we detect a hint of reference to John Carpenter’s Halloween soundtrack in the drive and pulse of the tune. Get stuck into this.
