Following on from yesterday’s immaculate version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Curxes, today we present our second cool yule track, which is once again being premiered here on Breaking More Waves and is offered up as a free download for a limited time as a present to readers. The wonderful Alice Jemima takes on Chris Rea’s Driving Home For Christmas and stamps (albeit softly) her own style all over the song. Uncomplicated guitar work, simple beats and little flourishes of keyboards join with Alice’s unmistakable girlish vocals to give you a little bit of a fuzzy feeling, rather like having a couple of glasses of mulled wine by a crackling open fire.
As well-known as this song is now, the original version failed to chart in the UK Top 40 when it was first released in 1988, but eventually made it to 33 in 2007.
Alice Jemima (who like Curxes was named as one of our Ones to Watch 2013) is no stranger to the odd cover version, having in the past recorded songs by Lana Del Rey, Rihanna and electronic pop group Strangers. And it was Strangers who returned the favour by inviting Alice to sing with them in London recently. Tonight she’s back in London playing alongside Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Lulu James at The House of Barnabas playing a special show curated by Radio 1 DJ and Bestival / Camp Bestival organiser Rob da Bank. Alas as yet Lana and Rihanna haven’t come knocking for a live duet, but there’s still time.
