Albums of the Year 2014 #13 Todd Terje - It's Album Time

The word ‘fun’ is not one which so called ‘serious’ music fans would ever consider in their vocabulary alongside their important collection of bearded folk, indie, obscure soul and classic rock collections.

If you’re that sort, the sort that thinks that music can’t be fun without somehow being low-grade then the debut, mainly instrumental, album from Norwegian DJ and producer Todd Terje isn’t for you. For the rest of us, here’s a record guaranteed to put a smile on your face and keep the quality high.

It’s Album Time is a record packed with humour and invention. From 2012’s euphoric club classic Inspector Norse through to tracks that take influence from cocktail jazz, salsa, lounge music and funky disco It’s Album Time is a record that has a big grin running deep through it. People sometimes describe art like this as being difficult to take seriously, as if the whole thing is some absurd joke, but in this case it’s difficult to take It’s Album Time seriously because we’re having too much fun listening to it - but it's no joke. This is an exceptionally well put together collection of music, that sometimes veers into the territory of lift muzak, but in this case that’s not a criticism - if you were listening to this in an elevator, you’d be dancing all the way to the top.
