Prides - Higher Love (Video)

Besides the obvious things like big synth riffs and songs that you can shout along to, the thing we like most about Prides is their drummer. The reasons?

1. The haircut.

2. He hits the drums hard.

3. He knows how to pull a proper drum pose. Even though he’s at the back, he grabs the spotlight and makes it count. For an example have a look around the 1 minute 31 seconds spot. See? Look at that hand that’s doing nothing – it’s making itself important. 10/10 for this.

We also like the fact that the lead singer wears spectacles. It may not be rock ‘n’ roll but we like it.

This video for Higher Love is fun as well. Not everyone can win at Bingo, nor can every gig be victorious. Still, Prides’ booking agent probably has a lot to answer for.

Prides - Out Of The Blue (Video)

This summer we almost choked on our cup of tea whilst watching the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony on our television when amongst the likes of Kylie and Lulu, up cropped Scottish synth pop trio Prides in a festival of dancing tent dreams. It's pretty unusual to see a relatively new band get featured on something quite as large scale. Well done whoever was involved. You can see that moment via some audience filmed footage here.

Whilst this new video for Out Of The Blue, the first song that Prides released and that we featured back in April 2013, has been out for a few weeks now, it hasn’t yet made it onto these pages. (Exam question: 'If Breaking More Waves is a new music blog, when does the music stop becoming new'? Discuss). So here it is in all its very wash of blue wonder. We particularly like the way the band do the nearly coordinated one leg bounce at their keyboards at the beginning.

In other news Out Of The Blue is now featured on the new FIFA 15 soundtrack. Again well done whoever is involved.

The band is also out on a UK tour in February after selling out their recent dates. Ticket links and dates are here.

Prides - The Seeds You Sow (Video)

We’ve already posted The Seeds You Sow, the new single from Scottish newcomers Prides, but as there’s now a video to go with the song we reckon it’s worth a second stab. The concept for this one is pretty simple; take the band, put them in front of the façade of a castle structure at night and add some nifty lighting effects onto the castle. It’s a lot like something they do every year at Dorset's Camp Bestival festival except without a band and more fireworks. But compare and contrast this one (here) with the one below and you’ll see what we mean.

24 Hour Blogathon : Prides - The Seeds You Sow

First introduced to readers of Breaking More Waves last April, Scottish electronic popsters Prides are back with a big meaty slab of a tune. From the blurb that we have sitting in our in box we’ve learnt that according to the band  “The Seeds You Sow is about realising that the things that happen around you are a result of your own actions. It's about realising that the one you're with isn't the one, and the consequences that go with it. We wanted to make sure that it was loud, brave, and would grab people as soon as they heard it. The vocal hook is all about letting go, losing yourself, shouting as loud as you can, caution to the wind.”

This one’s big, booming and from the word go the ‘yeay-yo’ hook screams ‘play me on the radio’. Whilst the musical style is somewhat different The Seeds You Sow reminds us a little of Bastille in the way that it’s pop music but has a bit more to it than most.

Prides have a number of UK live gigs coming up including London dates on the 5th Feb (Birthdays) 20th (Lexington) and the 21th (Roundhouse). They’ll also be out playing at SXSW in March. The Seeds You Sow is out on the 10th Feb.

Giant Fang - Aqualung (Prides Remix)

Having introduced you to Giant Fang, (possibly) Scotland’s answer to M83 earlier this week and synth pop princes in waiting Prides back in April, now someone has had the sweet idea of putting the two together for some remix action. The results will make you swoon.

If you want to know where summer has gone, we suggest that Prides / Giant Fang have stolen it all and magicked it into this. Chilled to perfection this glorious cocktail will lift you gracefully upwards with its course set for the sun until you burst in euphoria. This is synth warmth from the northern third of Great Britain; a place that seems to be delivering quality electropop with extreme regularity these days.

Dare we say it but it might even be better than the original? OK we just did.

Prides - New Waves

First there was Chvrches, now here’s another Scottish three piece demonstrating that stereotyping our friends from Alba of only being capable of kicking out nothing but great indie guitar / rock bands is way off the mark. Prides, a three piece from Glasgow hit hard and hooky with their debut track Out of the Blue. It’s a rewarding mix of raw synth pop and chanted vocals that to paraphrase LCD Soundsystem sounds like Prides would be singing “Well Yazoo is playing at our house, our house.” At the time of writing it has about 700 plays on Soundcloud. Probably 100 of those are due to Breaking More Waves going at it on repeat like a synth starved monkey. Our neighbours are probably getting very annoyed – we’ve been playing this one loud.

So who are Prides? A little bit of digging (one quick Google search) suggests that two of their number are Stewart Brock and Lewis Gardner who previously went under the name Midnight Lion, but now they’re a three piece with Stewart and new member Callum sharing vocals. Having launched just a few days ago the band have a small number of shows in Scotland lined up  (the brilliantly named Brew At The Bog in Inverness on 4th May and then Stag & Dagger in Glasgow on 18th May) but for those of us down south we’ll just have to wait a bit, but hopefully those gigs will come. Until then, we'll just keep pressing play on this one. "Well Prides is playing at our house, our house."
