Lyza Jane seems to be an exponent of the pleasure and pain principle: “It’s only worth it if it hurts, mixing pleasure with this work,” she sings in a voice that is half weary and bleakly resigned, half-sultry cool. If It Hurts goes deep, with a languid downtempo atmosphere recalling the spirit of Massive Attack and the more chilled / ambient side of Leftfield. This is music of muted tones, irregular clicky beats, drips of watery sounding electronica and a guest vocal by an unknown MC. It’s certainly not an in your face pop song; whilst the beats might sound like they’re getting a little excited, the key here is a subtle restraint and the rather captivating production.
If It Hurts is the first song to be released from Lyza’s debut EP, following a bit of blog recognition from the likes of ourselves, Hillydilly, Hearty Vibes and Repeat Button last year for her song Wilderness. Lyza plays the Underbelly, Hoxton, London on the 15th April.
