Thanks for the welcome!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010923635709588318.post-18900729098122400832010-05-12T00:03:16.993+01:002010-05-12T00:03:16.993+01:00Phil. However judging by audience reaction at Portsmouth, I'm not so sure now. The audience seemed very divided. As for portentous, it can of course mean awe-inspiring / miraculous and also self-important and pompous. Right now I think Hurts are all of these things and I mean them all in a good way. For me great pop can be pompous and take itself too seriously. In a way Hurts are bringing back an ethos similar to that of the new romantics in the 80's but with suits rather than big hair, make up and shoulder pads.

R.Blake - welcome to the "Love Hurts irrespective of commercial success or failure club." It almost felt at the NME gigs that there was a fence on one side Darwin Deez and the other Hurts. I wasn't sitting on that fence I had jumped fully off into the beautifully pretentious, but brilliantly great pop song side with you :)Breaking More Waves Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01678542701655601547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010923635709588318.post-70192377247123150052010-05-11T23:43:31.509+01:002010-05-11T23:43:31.509+01:00I saw Hurts at Koko in London, and they outshone e...I saw Hurts at Koko in London, and they outshone everybody else and then some. I think Everything Everything are incredibly talented--no I hate that word, it's so X Factor--great musicians, but it wasn't entirely my kind of music.

I wish I could say I liked Darwin Deez, but after the first dance and uppity track they lost me...though as with Breaking, the crowd seemed to adore them.

If Hurts do end up just having a dedicated niche following, besides thinking it extremely unjust, I will be a fully-paid up member.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010923635709588318.post-57238033605979632632010-05-11T23:28:29.211+01:002010-05-11T23:28:29.211+01:00Strange to hear you saying that the average man in...Strange to hear you saying that the average man in the street might pass Hurts by... I always had them down for almost instant success! The songs are so accessible. Perhaps the way that they were delivered required you to actually know who the hell they are.

Interesting that you describe them as "portentous", though, because that was exactly the word that sprang into my mind when I watched the almost comically dramatic introduction to the video last week (probably on this web site), except I certainly didn't intend for it to be positive!

Still willing to be proved wrong on the "Hurts Question".Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13243420208219812840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010923635709588318.post-42498999841981894272010-05-11T18:54:27.369+01:002010-05-11T18:54:27.369+01:00Gemma. Certainly worth watching once for a giggle, but I believe that the dance routines divert from the fact that his music was rather formulaic and mainly unmemorable. I seemed to be in the minority at the gig who thought this though (but hey ho as the lib dems have proven, sometimes being a minority is just as important as being in the majority :) )Breaking More Waves Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01678542701655601547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8010923635709588318.post-62646281973712367492010-05-11T18:26:48.616+01:002010-05-11T18:26:48.616+01:00I was there. I really enjoyed Darwin Deez, but having now purchased his album I have to say his live show was more fun than listening to him at home.

Hurts weren't really my thing, but they were very good at what they do and I think you are correct about the star qualityy, The lead singer had the X factor a bit, and could sing well.Gemmanoreply@blogger.com
